Jeffs was manager of the. farm, and had been in charge of the place during the time witness had been on active service witli the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Witness was back on furlough after three and a-half year's service, and as he was returning on active service he would naturally be very anxious about his farm if Jeffs had also to go into camp. He might add that Jeffs lyid the bridge of his left hand broken, and he was sure the man would be useless for active service. The Chairman: Are you asking for total exemption? Witness: Yes. I don't wish to appear unpatriotic but I know how difficult it is to secure a suitable experienced man to replace Jeffs. The reservist Jeffs gave corroborative evidence. The junior partner of the firm was on active service, but he had been replaced. The firm lost three male clerks in 1917, jail of whom had gone on military service: two of these clerks had been replaced bv girl labour. The result was that a great deal of extra work had been thrown upon the partners, and the remaining members of the staff. Before the war the firm consisted of three partners and 10 clerks; to-day there were two partners awl eight clerks in the office. It had been the senior partner's intention to retire - from active work on account of his health, but owing to l position wliicli had arisen he would now have to remain. The firm was in communication with three persons to replace witness, and whoever was appointed would not be able to come to Ilawera for a month at the earliest

In reply to the military representative appellant considered tile firm had as much tn do now us before the war.
