Sir Douglas l-laig reports: .Following an intense bombardment, strong enetnv forces violently attacked the French and [British positions from the neighborhood of Metoren to Zillebeke, The enemy also attacked the Belgians north of Ypres. The severest fighting developed on the whole Allied front. The' 25th, 40th, and 21st British Divisions completely repulsed all attempts to enter their positions, and, despite the constant and determined attacks in great strength, they maintained their line intact. The enemy s losses were very heavy, French repulsed heavy attacks on the hills about Scherpenborg and Mont Kouge. At the point where tha enemy penetrated for a short distance they were f]tiicklv driven out and the greater part of the ground regained by counterattacks. The Belgians repulsed all attacks after sharp fighting, inflicting severe casualties. The fighting is continuing at certain points along the Allied battle-front. Owing to the bad weather the aeroplanes dropped only a few bombs on various targets. A French communique states: There | is reciprocal artillery activity north and south of the Avre and in the region of Fle.mont. An enemy detachment attempted to cross the Oise east of AVaresnes, but was caught by our fire and dispersed.
