BALLOT FOK MAOUI KMX FOIiCEMEXTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 20. It lias been decided to hike ;i ballot of the First Division Waikato Maoris within the next few days for the purpose of supplying reinforcements lor the Maoi" Contingent serving in Jfrance. The ballot is only being upplied to the Waikato Natives, for the reason that they have consistently stood aloof from voluntary recruiting, all along leaving it to loyal Natives to carry the burden. • The machinery for taking the ballot is now complete- The total number of First Division Native reservists on the 'roll in the district affected is 4200. Of these it is proposed to call rip 200 in the forthcoming ballot. The following special Native Military Service Board has been established:— Charles E. MacCormick (Judge of the Native Land Court), John Ormsby (OtoImneu), Pitiera Taipua (Otaki). .
DEATH OF KING OF TONGA, Auckland, April 29-•: The King of Tonga died on April 5, of consumption. His daughter, Princess Salole, wife of the Governor of Navau, was proclaimed Queen next day. Fifteen Fijian Natives, who are followers of a new religion, making Saturday and Sunday both rest days, have been sentenced to imprisonment, one to 18 months, on charges of seditious utterances.
The Legislative Council of Fiji passed a resolution offering further assistance in men and money to carry on the war. THE GREy SEAT. Wellington, April 29 It is understood that Mr. James Kerr, who has been mentioned as a Liberal candidate for the Grey seat, has decided to withdraw, as he considers that three candidates in the field would only result of vote-splitting.
