THE AMERICAN FORCES.
ONLY A SMALL NUMBER DS T THE FIELD. ! (From Our Own Correspondent) Wellington, April 2C. A local newspaper reports the statement of a returned traveller, who says that "in November there were already half a million Americans in France." This statement should not pass uncontradicted. Exact figures cannot be quoted, though they have been mentioned in unofficial circles. But it is a fact that at the beginning of the present offensive on the West front a few weeks ago the Americans in France did not number anything like half a million; they were but a fraction of thatj number. The Americans have got into 1 the fight much more slowly than was expected. That is one reason why New Zealand, in common with other parts of tile Empire, is making a special effort to increase reinforcements at the present tiipe.' The Americans will be a mighty "factor in the war presently. But they are not ready yet.
