STRATFORD

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention ] Stratford, April 24. Messrs. R. 11. Cameron, T. Richardson, and C. D, Sole have been nominated for the vaeanccy at the council table caused by the resignation of Cr. A. Coleuian. The ratepayers nominating Mr. Cameron are Margaret E. Budge, Ellen F Good, A. H. Nelson, C, Jackson, R. McK Morison, T. L, Paget and W. H. H. Young. T. Richardson's nominators are Messrs. W. Lander, C. E. James and T. W. Smith, senr. Messrs. J. McAllister and H. LI. Betts nominated Mr. Sole. On a charge of stealing chaff, valued at 15s, a middle-aged man named F J. Milne, was before Mr. J. W McMillan, J.P., this afternoon. Sergeant Dale applied: for a remand till Friday at 10 a.m., pending further enquiries, the police indicating that the value may be increased to £ls. There appears to be a fair amount of railway traffic at Stratford during the past few days. It is no unusual thing to find several lines of rails filled with sheep trucks, coal waggons, butter vans, etc. The constant tooting of engines, the skipping across rails of porters, together with the noise made by stock, creates an impression that Stratford is a very important centre, and from returns this proves correct. Included in the business to be discussed at the annual meeting of householders next Monday evening will be that of establishing continuation classes. If started, they will be compulsory to boys and girls up to 17 years, and while the present committee is favorable, it rightly considers that the matter should be left to the householders or the new committee. It is understood that Mr. A. Gray, director of the New Plymouth Technical College, will attend the meeting, and answer any questions. Private W Scanlon, who left with the 22nd Reinforcements, is reported killed in action. His mother lives at New Plymouth. Young Scanlon was well known and much esteemed in and around Stratford and Ngaere, and the news of his death will be received with general regret.

The Egmont Club is holding an unveiling ceremony on Thursday evening, when the roll of honor placed to the memory of those who have enlisted and those who have paid the supreme penalty will be thrown open for inspection.

Stratford shopkeepers are observing a close holiday on Thursday, in honor of Anzac Day. The bowlers are having an all-day tournament, and the hockey players are visiting Hawera. Apart from this the day will be of the Sabbath calmness.

At the council meeting on Saturday, Cr. W. H. Were struck a popular note when ho said that while he was as loyal as the next man he thought there were far too many holidays. In these days of shortage of labor every man was needed on the farm, and these holidays disturbed the men. He thought that as far as the council is concerned, seeing that the holidays for the year had'been enumerated, it would be just as well to go on with their work, which was necessary to win the war, and that the chairman represent the council at any Stratford function. Other councillors agreed, and thus ft is not obligatory on council surfacemen to down tools and celebrate. . The annual meeting of parishioners of the Holy Trinity Church is to be held this week. The report shows the finances to be sound, but recommends that any surplus in hand should be devoted to repainting the church. Mention is made of greater interest being taken by church members, and the necessity for building up the choir. Don't spoil that picture or photograph for want of a frame. Rather enhance its value by purchasing a photograph frame at C, E. James' fancy goods warehouse- Ho will fit all sizes so don't hesitate to make enquiries. Have you seen the Ucan Haircutter? Cuts to any degree of length. Just the thing for the soldier in the trench, and for the 1 home.
