Duckworth, Messrs. Douglas and M'Lean. L W Johns, Mrs C. Ivncehone, J Mou rie, J. M'Lood, T Kash, -- Topping, and Hogg. That Mr G. Tippins be offered the lease of the Vogeltown School site at £1 per annum, the hoard to resume posi-i sion at any time iC required for schoo purposes. That the application of Mr. G. On the motion af the chairman, Mr. Trimble, it was resolved that the lessee of the school site at Rawhitiroa be requested to carry out the conditions ol his lease regarding the of the site, and that the truant officer report on this particular lease at next meeting of the board. PROPOSED ADDITIONS To FRANKLEY SCHOOL. With reference to the proposal to add to the Frankley School building, Mr- A J. Morton, senior inspector, reported that there is, under present conditions, a need for this, chiefly because there av three teachers. The floor space of 12SS square feet provides under the regulations for the 90 on the roll At present two standards receive instruction in the gymnasium In any case, however, before consideration is given to the proposal, regard has to be directed to the effect of the establishment of a school at Vogeltown, including all the standards It is possible that the latter would reduce the attendance at Frankley The report was received. Mr, Smith said that that was the reason advanced some year* ago for not proceeding with the additions at Frankley road. If the Department was not prepared to proceed with the erection of the Vogeltowp School for three o: | four years, that was no reason v/' the people at Brantley Road should suffer. The Chief Inspector stated that the! floor space wa» sufficient according to the Department's ideas, the Department not taking into consideration the space occupied by cupboards, etc. Having three teachers in two rooms Interfered with the organisation. It was resolved that the matter of . additions to the Frankley Sdhool be held over pending reply to the board's -application for a grant for the erection of a school at Vogeltown. OVERSEER'S REPORTMr- C. H. Moore, the board's overseer, reported a a follows: New Work.—The alterations and repairs to the old gymnasium building at !' Hawera are all completed. The additions are also completed at InglewooA, with tjie exception of the paint work. The additions and alterations to one porch entrance and a teacher's room at one end of the long classroom were also carried out. The Department has made a grant for the erection of two class-rooms on to the art room at the New Plymouth Technical College, and suggests that it be made to carry a second storey I propose to break bMk from the line of the present building and caryy out the whole of the work in concrete. This is !in aecord&nc« with the plan submitted to the Department. 1 would respectfully ask to have this matter gone into. Repairs, Etc—At Tarata, a new tank and stand was erected, a concrete floor was put in the shelter shed, and general ,repairs were carried out. The committee found the shingle for the conerete. We have a number of repair works still t.o carry out at several schools. Owing to thts urgent new work, we have had to hold these over, but during the next month we shall be able to dear them up. Plans are completed for a new school at Kini to replace the present building and a new school at Arawhata road.. I also submit a new plan for the proposed school at Vogeltown, and i further plan for the Normanby school. As shown, these plans are partly pn the open-air system, and a special feature is I the equal and proper lighting and ven m tilatmg conditions in all the elass- """ rooms. I propose to put in a new kind of sash frame, which, I think, will be a

great improvement in school windowsGeneral:—There are. several matters referred to me which I would ajk permission to hold over. In regard to the Patua school stove, I would recommend that permission i>e given to the Carring-t-on Committee to 'have this stove for their school The matter of the P.itua school building requires further counidcration. The following matters require attention:—Beth tanks at Puniho are worn out, at the residence,, and will require renewing; a few small repairs also need attention At Ra'hotu the range at the residence requires renewing, and also one tank. The matter of boarding-in the verandah is receiving consideration. It is not. merely .boarding-in the verandah—provision has to be made to prevent blocking out the light from the room adjoining. One of the school tanks also requires renewing At Mangatoki the committee have filled up in front of the dam with boulders as requested, and the work is now satisfactory There are several small repairs required at the school, and a request to have some sort'of a movable top above t'hc out office cisterns. At present part of the roof requires to 'in l removed when any adjustment is neces-

At Riverlea,' as instructed, I went 1 nto the matter of allowing the lica readier to have the use of the two acres s leased at present to a neighbour Tin- - s not fenced on the one side, and half- : ;ost of same would be about £7 Ids For several reasons, I wornd recommend ; that the matter be held in abeyance for . ;lie present. I visited the schools where the sheH«' , sheds were damaged more or less. The school buildings have received very lit. lamage. At Ohangiu both shelter shed wore blown down, one completely demolished, the other turned upside down, i We can get about enough material out of both to build one shed. The committee wish to have a new shed, 20 x 10, for the "iris: the cost would be about £•' without the floor. I suggested the commit tec s'hou'd find £ls and submit tlii-s offer to the board. At Pungarchu tllo shed was blown down. There is enough iron to cover the whole of a shed about ■>o x 10. I would suggest that the committee pay half-cost. The total amount would be about £lO At Okato the slhed suffered the loss of the roof only. It will cost aibout £7 or £S to put this ri"ht. The glazed top was also blown off one of the chimneys, but was not damaged, and can easily be put back There are other cases of smalt damags to several schools which can easily h rectified. The following matters were referred to t'he overseeer: —New tanks at Mangaliunie and Korito, repairs to school and residence at Mangatoki, repairs to siwltci shed at Pembroke, concreting shelter shed floor at Ohura, and falling bush on school'site at Waitaanga, also repairs to residence at Mere Merf. ADDITIONS TO TECHNICAL COLLEGE. The Department of Education notified that a grant of £1397 had been approved , for additions and alterations to the New Plymouth Technical College. The Department stipulated that the addition should be made so as to carry two ' stories if neoessary. The overseer stated that this would | look unsightly, and that the additions i should be carried out in uniformity with ( the present design. It was resolved that representations | be made to the Department in the direc- , tion of having the south wall built of j brick and the roof in conformity with j the present builduig, and that the chair- t man he authorised to interview the De- < partment. ' HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL. t It was resolved that the board ac- ' knowledges receipt, of the Department's jletter, in which it is stated'that the pre- } sent arrangements at Hawera .District j High School should continue until the £ end of the present year. In reply, the s board is still of opinion that the change should he made as requested, but that t under no circumstances should the dc- t lay be later than the end of the present 1 year. •' The science material at Manaia is to 1 be handed over to the Hawera Schoo. * i NEW SCHOOLS. < Application was received from settlers, at Matemateonga for a school to be I established in the district. The secre- i tary was authorised to obtain the neces- ' «arv information, in order that the application may be considered by the senior inspectors. 1 T'he Chief Inspector reported that, according to the information supplied, there appeared to exist the necessity for a new school at Ararimu East, as long as there is reliable assurance that pfactically all the children of school age will attend. FITZROI*. SCHOOL. The Fitzroy School Committee applied for the addition of another room to the sdhool. At present there were rooms. One, which was 25 x 28, under war conditions was supposed to accommodate 70 pupils, was occupied by Stanjdards 3, 4, 5, anil (i (two teachers and | part time a probationer), numbering 74 pupils. Not only was the room overcrowded, but there was difficulty in organisation. The. school room, 32ft x 20ft, to accommodate 04, was occupied bv Standards 1 and 2, with a roll number of 02. The third room, of similar size, was occupied by the infants, with a roll number of 76. The letter pointed out that the roll number was steadily increasing, and was likely to continue, as t'he district promised to be a, thicklypopulated one- The Minister of Education, the Director of Education, qfid the members of the board had seen the conditions under which the teachers were working. On the motion of Messrs. Dixon and Smith, it Was resolved to refer the matter to the senior inspector for a report. GENERAL. It w?.2 resolved that the board accept the. offer\of the Obangai School Com ir.ittee to contribute £lO towards the cost of shelter shed, on condition that they put in a concrete floor at their own cost. The Pungarehu School Committee is to be informed that t'he board will reinstate the shelter shed provided the committee contribute £5. The shelter shed at 1 Okato will be repaired by the board. The action of the Lincoln, Pukengahn Otakelio, and Kapuni committees in elu.; ing their sehools oil account of diph-

theria was approvedIt was resolved to pay the premium of the fire insurance of the West End school gymnasium. The action of the Ongarulic committee with reference to fencing off a portion of the school grounds be approved, the committee to be informed of the advisability of obtaining the authority of the hoard before undertaking alterations in connection with the school and grounds. The hoard regretted that it could not accede to Mr. A. Palmer's application for :i refund of his removal expenses from Mere Mere to Otangawai. The matter of removing tlie' Oha! Inira school was referred to- the Auckland Education Board.
