THE GREY SEAT.

PROBABLE CANDIDATES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, April 23. •Tames Kerr, proprietor of the Petone Chronicle; Thomas EUlou Coutes, barrister and solicitor, of Grcymouth; and J. Wilson, quartz mining agent, of Reefton, are announced aa candidates for the Grey seat. SOME CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, April 22. Following upon the statement that Mr. P. Webb is legally debarred from standing, interest in the impending Grey election has been iiioused by the announcement that Messrs. Thomas Eldon Coates and James Kerr will contest the .vacancy. The former is a popular lawyer, who devotes most of his time to pastoral pursuits, being the owner of three farms on the West Coast. Air. Kerr is proprietor and sub-editor of the "Grey River Argus." He is the eldest son of the late Hon. James Kerr, M.'L.C. Mr. Kerr states that he stands as a Liberal, supporting the National Government. Mr. Coates will, it is understood, also'support the Government, though reserving the right to criticise its administration. The Labor Party intends to put up a candidate, and most likely it will fall to the lot of Mr. Holland, who recently resigned the editorship of the Maoriland Worker to carry the opposition banner, although a large number of Laborites would prefer a local man, and this might yet influence their final decision. Mr. Mark Fagan (secretary of the luangahua Miners' Union) has definitely declined nomination. The name of Mr. 13. W. Seantlebury (chairman of the Inangahua County Council) is also mentioned, but as he is absent in Wellington nothing definite is known regarding his intentions. That the vacancy will be desperately contested is manifest from the organisation already going on. In this respect Labor so far holds the advantage
