(I'rom Our Own Correspondent ) Eltham, April 22. Well done, Eltham! The District Patriotic Appeal has closed, with the satisfactory result that £2300 is now Sivailable for the various patriotic funds. Saturday was the closing day of the Appeal, and the town and country fnj eainc into town With their pockets well lined with coin- ill*. W. D. lioss puts plenty of energy and enthusiasm into his work, and his copper nail was a fine institution for netting pennies, £75 goiiii: to his"credit. Mr. W. Clarry used his butcher's block and shop to such good purpose that the funds wont up £9O by this method. The returned soldiers had u museum that attracted considerable attention —and coin— £27 being paid the curious and interested. The prize parcel packets raised £SO- The luncheon and tea rooms gathered in another £27. whilst the fancy goods stajls in the Town Hall netted £6O. A £SO lions, attended to sec the pictures, witness ti-tug-of-war, and hear the financial results. The pull was between four teams, and was won by the Hibernians. Afterwards the result was given at £2300, and the amounts for each town made up as follows:—Eltham, £O3! : Mangatoki, £5.52: Kaponga, (incomplete), £215; Rotokare, £150; Rawhitiroa, £116; Te Roti, £00; Riverlea, £3O; Omoaua, £54; Pukenuahu, £SO; Mata, £4B; MangamingilJ £3O; Awatuna, £2O.
According to the chairman, the receipts from the swimming baths totalled ISs 4d less than the expenditure. This :s not good finance, and ifffiieates alol of things. Apart i'rom the small debit, the committee have done well, as repairsete.. to the baths absorbed £3O. A new set of faces will proba'bly he required to take up the duties in future, as the majority of those at present holding flu positions are not keen on having anothei 12 months.

strongly at the hall there on Friday night, and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment provided by the scholars. A very acceptable progTammme was submitted, encores being ntimrtous. Mr. Aslbury (chairman) ably presided. It was mentioned tl::H tix proficiency and one aoiuuetcncy ceitijicate had been secured by Standard \ r T. Gtholars. whilst i.he dux medal and junior free place were won by Xila Cuvtei'-, II year.; of age. Congratulations to Headmaster Ciirfeis ami his assiviaiifs on tin; excellent. results. At the close of the concert a dance was held, Ml- .1. Carlson being the M.C., and Mrs. M'Oii'thy at the piano. As a result oi the entertainment. the school and committee funds will be improved by over £2O. It is with great regret T have to record the death of Mrs. I'. Styles, after a. fairly long ilin Deceased has lived in Eltbam practically all her life, and her death will come as a great surprise to many ol her friends. The late Mrs. Styles was recently a natient in the Stratford Hospital, and though her condition was nor as satisfactory as her intimate relatives could wish, the end was not thought fo be so near. At the carlv age of she leaves a bereaved husband and a fainly of five Her parents. Mr. and Mrs. 10. Whiting, are two of the oldest identities of 101tham, and general sympathy will 'he extended to Mr. Styles and deceased's parents in their loss.
