STRATFORD.
(Vrom Our Own Correspondent) [All communications, lettcis, etc., leit with Mr. 11. .1. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive promut attention.} Stratford, April 21. Tim efforts of 1 lio Women's . National Reserve to lm'iM up funds for tin? Aotcu Convalescent. Home. Egypt, culminated in "fiol.l day" here on Saturday, when, by moult* of Tho. tl-:> rooms, r.'art. etc., 1 iu> promoters secured tiio very satisfactory] sum oi €l4O tis lid, and it is understood there are other amounts conic ill. The tea rooms were controlled by -Mrs. Tucker, Miss Kobson and others, and secured £lO Is 3d. Mesdamer, J. li. Hine, Maunscll (Toko), Budge, and Good were ill charge of the mart, and netted £24 2s. sweets stall, by Mesdames l/niacke and Malone, secured liberal support, being besieged at times, so it is not surprising that those possessing a ''sweet tooth" paid up .€35 lis. Another stall, in the charge of ilrs. lvirby and assistants, had a very busy day, clearing £4f>. The Midhirst lady, Mrs. Hogg, made the most of the afternoon in her department, and added £lO is to the total, while ill's. (Dr.) Paget also helped to swell the sum by .C(i Ss with necklaces, etc. There were several rallies got oil', Mrs. P. J, Macdonald winning the doulton vase, and a iloulton jug went to Mrs. M. Maedonald. A very useful article to own these days, a roll of silk, went to a country visitor, Mr. Martin, while it was perhaps only natural that the prize pumpkin and its trophy should go to a farmer, named Hancock. Sergeant H. Masters, who won several medals and distinctions at (Jallipoli and in France, also won u prize on Saturday. Where all the ladies worked so hard to obtain results, it would be hard to individualise the assistants, but doubtless the president, Mrs. .T. W. McMillan, is more than pleased with the results achieved.
A notice of motion by Cr. Baskin, "That the engineer be given three . months' notice of dismissal for disobedience." tabled at the previous meeting of the County Council, "fizzled out" at the Saturday meeting. Cr. Baskin moved his motion, and then enumerated a few instances where he considered work had been unnecessarily delayed. On resuming his scat the Mirth irst member found he was leading a lone hand, and having no seconder, the motion naturally lapsed. An application by the Cardiff-Dairy Co. to take l.">!) yards shingle and 2f)o yards of stone from the council's depot, and also the use of the council's crusher was granted, after the engineer had expressed his approval. Miss Manoy. Stratford, was successful in winning the box of butter submitted at the Stanley Road concert o,i Friday, organised by Mrs. Sangster. in aid of the Aotea Convalescent Home, Kgvpt. The winner was satisfied with the "honor," and generously donated the butter to the home, and in due course, with the assistance of Captain .1. B. Hine, M.l'., the butter will grace the dining rooms of kgvpt's home. A camisole, disposed of at the same concert, also found a new owner in Miss 10. Hine. Although alteration of dates prevented some of the performers assisting who had promised to do so, a very acceptable programme was submitted, solos being contributed by Mcsdames C. McLaren. Bennett, and Hatcher, and Messrs. Aitken, Peters and Anderson. Variety was given by a step dance by Mr. Connor, and pipe music by Ml'. J. Jj. Wade. luicores were numerous, all the items proving very acceptable. The accompanists were Mr. (.'. 11. Fox and Miss Anderson, the latter also plaving the music l»r the dance that followed. The sale of work netted €4 14s (id; the cheese Ul 4 12s (id, a very good total; while a sheep auctioned brought ; £27. By the time all returns are in. it is anticipated that Stanley Road efforts will he something like .€IOO. Captain Jiine, M.P., was present, and delivered a few remarks of an encouraging nature regarding the war.
