STRATFORD.
{From Our Oku Correspondent) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H J Hopkins, bookseller, will receive liruMpt intention ] FARMERS' UNION' The annual meeting of the Stratford branch was held on Sunday h.ij. .iu. Mr. J. Ljcena (president) in the chair. Tlie chairman of the Waikato branch desired information as to whether the Stratford—Toko line passed through a deposit of limestone suitable for agricultural purposes. Mr. Milrfell said that he and others had formed a committee and made an inspection of these deposits, but did not consider it advisable to go on with the work. Personally, he believed it would pay if worked in a small way, hut large quantities could not be put out profitably. The secretary announced that he
had forwarded wlmt information he eoiiid gather. Mr. Linnell thought that they might give every prominence to these deposits. At present the railage was almost prohibitive. After a little discussion it was resolved to increase the membership fee to £l, and to notify Mr. G. H. Buckeridge, provincial secretary, to that effect.
The Taranaki branch of the Educational Institute forwarded a circular letter requesting support in urging on the National Government the paramount necessity of making better provision for the education of children. It was resolved: "That Mr. Sim (president) or a representative be invited to attend a meeting of the union and give the institute's views on the question. The question of remits for the annual conference of delegates was discussed, and the following were passed:—Mr. Marfell: "That the Government be again urged to give free railage up to 100 miles of sea-borne lime, as is tlie case of lime from works in close proximity to railway
lines." Mr. Lucena: "That the Gjvernment legislate in order that stock straying on property be advertised by the owners of the property within 21 days " !Jr. Hunt: "That the Government be asked to legislate to make provision so that at the end of tlie war mortgages may be extended in proportion to the time they had been running at the commencement of the war at the same rate of interest, in order to ease the money market." Election of officers.—President, .T. Lucena (re-elected); treasurer, R. Masters (re-elected); delegate to provincial conference, 15. Marfell; delegate to executive, J. Lucena. GENERAL.
Inspectors Morton and Ballantyne wore inspecting the Stratford District Higli School to-day. A few names have been mentioned in connection with the vacancy on the Borough Council, amongst the number being Messrs. .1. H. Ford and C. I). Sole. Mr. Ford polled very well at the last election, and would make a good councillor, Whilst Mr. C. I). Sole has previous experience at the council table to assist him should he go to the poll. Mr. R. Mclv. Morison said he was enjoying a spell from coimcil work, and was not hankering after the job. ExPrivate C. S. Kelly is a well-known figure in Stratford. Before enlisting he was on the stall of the Stratford Post, and since his return here he has been following his old pursuits—new.;-hunting. This is no light task to a man who is obliged to move round on crutches, but during the last few weeks l.e has been in the hospital and undergone an operation. Word reaches me that the genial Charles Stewart is once again on the mend, aucl there are many of us who hope that his health will go on improving until he can move round as of old—without props.
Winter is approaching. With golf and hockey meetings one can detect winter in the air. The girls here have got a club going, the following being the list of officers: Patron, Mr. 1). J. Red Triangle appeal have reached £IOOO, the sum aimed at by the promoters. It has been suggested to hold a thanksgiving service on Sunday afternoon, April 28.
Don't spoil that picture or photograph for want of a frame. Rather enhance its value by purchasing a photograph frame at C- E. James' fancy goods warehouse- He will fit all sizes so don't hesitate to make enquiries- Have you seen the Ucan Haircutter. Cuts to any degree of length. Just the thing for the soldier in the trench, and for the home.
