STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent) [All communirntiuns, letters, etc, left will* Mr. H. .1. Hopkins; buuksclkr, will receiie prompt attention.] Stratford, April 12. Tlie wet weather militated somewhat against the attendance of the public at the concert and dance held last evening in the Town Hall. The merits of the performers warranted a .crowded house, but the persistent rain was a factor against this. The sale of tickets was very good, and this, with the door takings, should nett a fair sum towards the Aotea Convalescent Home, Kgypt, for which the entertainment was organised. Encores were numerous, and the programme prolonged, but the performers being in generous mood, the audience certainly received its money's worth A very neat song and dance by Misses Milner and Rowe, trained by Mrs. Mcßetli, received a very demonstrative reception, and thoroughly deserved the applause accorded the item "In the Firing Line,"' a song, by Miss Brctherton, caught the popular fancy, and that lady had to acknowledge a recall. It is some time since Miss Rene Fields was heard liere, and she received a recall for her solo, "She is Far From the Land," and thoroughly deserved her success. A duet, "Venetian Boat Song," by Mrs. Massey and Mr Lonergan, was also encored. Mr. 0. T Walters was heard to great advantage in "The Ice King's Soug," and had to acknowledge an undeniable encore. "Dreamboats," one of the sweetest songs sung nowadays, earned a decided encore for Mr Tom Ranford, while a similar coraph'rnent awaited Mr. B .1. Peters in "The' Grey North Sea.'' The comic element was entrusted to Mr Frank Ranford, and his droll stories, gestures and singing necessitated his presence on the stage for quite a lengthy period. Mr. Fred Foley generally has something novel and he scored a success in his item, "Musical Billiard Cues and Magic." Mention should be made of the instrumental item (cornet solo, "Rosary") by Mr Sharp, in which he was assisted by Misses Hopkins (piano and violin) "Till the Sands of the Desert Grow Cold" secured a wellmerited recall The accompanists were Mr C. H. Fox and Miss R Moon. The dance that followed also secured liberal patronage, and in the excellent music by Mr C. H. Fox dancers had all they could desire, and footed it merrily until 2.30 a.m., when the M's.C, Messrs. Elgar and Neilson, called a halt. Mrs. Massey and Mr Lor.ergan, as prime movers, have every reason to be proud of the success of their efforts, while the supper arrangements, etc., also call for a word of praise to the ladies.

GENERAL. Lieut. E. Young, who received his seecond wounds at Passchendaele, and was invalided home, together with Sergeant Walter Matthews, onetime auctioneer at Inglewood, were visiting Stratford today.

Although it is some weeks yet to the A. and P Association's concert and dance, the promoters are already assured of the services of Miss Kino Keno (Wanganui), Miss Lynne Edwards (Hawera). and Mr. P. Eadie (Palmerston North), all performers of note on the concert platform.

Don't spoil that picture or photograph for want of a frame. Rather enhance its value by purchasing a photograph frame at C E. James' fancy goods warehouse. He will fit all sizes so don't hesitate to make enquiries. Have you seen the I'can Haireutter. Cuts to any degree of length. Just the thing for the soldier in the trench, and for the home.
