TURF TOPICS. (By '"Moluroa".) Now that Desert Gold and Biplane arc definitely fixed to meet in the Awapuni Gold Cup on Wednesday, little else is talked about in sporting circles, it is the topic of the hour everywhere you go. Sportsmen from all over Australasia are hurrying to Palmerston North, aid the crowd that will roll up there next week should be easily a record one. A big contingent has arrived from Sydi.cy, Melbourne and other parts of Australia, including Mr. Sol Green, who bred Biplane, and is, therefore, most interested in the colt's running. These men from across the Tasman are big bettors, and it is safe to say that they will be on Biplane to a man. Their confidence in the Comedy King colt is met calmly by the New Zealanders' confidence in the prowess of Desert Gold, and a battle royal, both on the course and on the tote, is certain. To speak of Desert Gold getting beaten on a dry track seems almost like lese majeste, and we will leave it at that. Should the weather prove to he against the meeting, it is to be hoped that a match will be arranged at an early date to settle the all-absorbing argument. Jockster Harold Young, has been reinstated, and will be on Volo at Palmerston. The Hawera horse is very well at present, and should give a good account of himself.
Old Monologue met his death the other day. He wandered on to the Foxton train line, and the beastly engine, not knowing he was a racehorse, ran into him and carved him into mincemeat, t Red Ribbon has run six seconds in important events this season, but with one victory (at Tauhcrenikau) his winnings have totalled £I6OO.
The Avondale course is not by any means a fast one, but Hymeona rushed over six furlongs there on Saturday in the respectable time of 1.14. No wonder Madam Ristori had no chance with the son of Hymettus. Glorify, who ran a close second to Nystad in the Great Easter Handicap, and subsequently won thc'Final Handicap at Ricearton, is a much discussed candidate at Awapuni He is not badly treated with 7.13 in the Autumn Handicap. There cannot be, anything the matter with Biplane, judging by the way he waltzed over the opposition in the Challenge Stakes. He put up the full penalty of 141bs, and then won in a canter in lmin 26 4-ssec, which equalled Emperador's record of 1914.
A top noteher was produced at Ricearton last week in the shape of Gay Lad, an imported colt by Cellini—Gay some. His chance came in the Addington Handicap, in which Cooing, Love Token, Missouri, Lovesick, Bagdad, Linden and Bon d'Or were better fancied. Gay Lad simply played with his eleven opponents, and won pulling up by half a dozen lengths. The English-bred colt scored again at Timaru on Thursday, and, needless to Bay, he was a warm favorite this time.
The anti-sport crows in the House of Representatives are well trained. The other day, when the Premier spoke of shutting down non-essential industries, these old birds woke up and croaked, '•Shut down racing." Then they voted themselves another year of office, and fell asleep again. Finmark will be a runner in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes on Wednesday, and those who are. fond of hailing Heathercote as the two-year-old of the season may change their tune abruptly when the pair meet. One of the runners ir. the Great Western Steeples at Riverton last week was handicapped with the name of Capanhuolmoh, but it proved too much for him, and he threw out early. What is Capanhaolmoh, anyhow? A new kind of cold in the head, or an imitation of a man with no roof to his mouth*
Hymestra's showing at Ricearton last week does not suggest that he will prove a worthy opponent to Desert Gold and Biplane at Palmerston. Bisogne, Koesian, Menelaus and Impediment have nothing to recommend them, and Estland should account for the best of them.
The progress of the Waimate Plains Trotting Club is reflected in the totalisator returns, which read as follows--1915, £4353; 1916, £7972; £1917, £lO,850; and 1918, £17,084.
The Manawatu Racing Club's meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Manawatu Trotting Club will supply the excitement on Friday.
