The Federal Commissioner of Taxation, replying to statements that' the stakes won by Biplane at the spring meetings in Australia last year were treated as excess profits and taxed heavily, says that this is totally incorrect. No such action was adopted by the Taxation Department. IN PRAISE OF DESERT GOLIS. Sydney, April ft. Commenting on Desert Gold's superiority over her Australian rivals, the Sun says that as far as concerned the form of horses competing that Autumn Desert Gold stood out as champion up to 11 miles weight-for-age. Wedge, was lucky to beat her in the Futurity Stakes. Although some New Zealand critics advised their Australian friends that ehe might show the effects of all her racing when she stripped in Australia, they proved wrong. Apart from her inexhaustible supply of vitality, which means speed, Desert Gold has a wonderful constitution. During all her stay of seven weeks the trainer never once found her sick or sorry, despite all her galloping and travelling. As a matter of fact she improved with racing, and was much better the day. she won the All Aged Stakes than when she began her campaign, and she even surprised her admirers in that race, and made good judges declare that never had they seen one good performer defeat another as good as Cetigne so decisively in all their experience of racing.

TOO MUCH RACING. Sydney, April 0 Replying to mucli sharp criticism arising from the record attendances at Randwick during last meeting, while the thinned Australian battalions in France so insistently call for reinforcements, the big men of sport, most vitally interested, agree that there is too much racing, but they claim that the fault lies with the (iovernmerit in not curtailing the number of meetings. They declare that the recommendations made for the limitation of sport were so whittled away, presumably because of influential representations that racing is rapidly getting back to its former extraordinary proportions. They insist that the object of the big clubs is sport and improving horse breeding, not, for profit. As to other clubs and pony clubs, which cater for non-utility animals, they demand that these should be reduced to a minimum' and point out that since the commencement of the war no fewer than 128 races have been vim on pony courses, the prize money averaging only £73-
