DISTRICT NEWS.

RAHOTU (From Our Own Correspondent). The annual Sunday School concert held on Wednesday evening was a very successful affair, the items of the children being particularly good, showing the patience and trouble of their teachers, the Misses Kughson. Mrs. G. Hopkins was also heard to great advantage in her song "My Ain Folk." which suited her voice splendidly and ns an encore sang ''The Better Land.'' The children's prizes were distributed during the evening and several received a very nicely bound Bible, which, it is hoped, they will appreciate as they grow older. The Patriotic Committee held a dance on Monday evening, the Farewell Committee joining in to farewell Private Paul Willcox and welcome home Private Magnus Htighsen. Mr. Gibson expressed pleasure at seeing Magnus home amongst us all again and hoped he would soon be strong and well and asked him to accept a suitably inscribed medal. Mr. Hughson, sen., asked Private Willcox to accept a wristlet watch and wished him good health and a safe return, Miss Muriel Williams attaching it to her uncle's wrist. Both soldiers responded appropriately. Songs were, rendered bv the following ladies: Mrs. Hopkins, "When the Heart is Young,'' Miss Willcox "The Englishman,'' and Miss Rowlands "Coming Home,'' and then were sung 'For They Are dolly tlood Fellows' and "God Save the King" by the company- Those not wishing to dance then withdrew to the supper room for supp?..- which was supplied by ll>e ladies, Airs Wright being in charge. It is with great pleasure we hear that Sergeant Dar>:y Penwarden, -who has been so long on his back, is now able to get about on crutches, one leg being quite right and the other about an inch and a half short. He is looking extremely well, too.

TARATA. (From Our Own Correspondent). Quite a gloom was cast over our disMiei when word was received that Licit. David Patcrson was killed in action JJeutmant Paterson was the first man to enlist in the Tarafa district and left with the Main Body, lie served through Galiipoli and was then returned to New Zealand for his corn-Mission. He again left New Zealand with the 34th Mounted Reinforcements for Palestine. Before the war Lieut. Paterson took a keen interest in the Momiteds and never missed a parade or camp. He took a keen interest in all local affairs and was secretarv of the local Tennis Chili for a number of years. - Ilis death lias come as a great shod;, to the district and our hcertfelt sympathy is extended to Mrand Mrs. R Patei'3on and family for their sad less. Mr. and Mrs- Paterson have two more sons serving at the front. Willie and Dugald, and, through the gloom, how proud they must feel. Lieut. Paterson has fought and died, as he lived, nobly, and I am sure h-;> jied the death he wished—striking for lieedom and humanity. May his sorrowing parents, brothers and s ; sters be comforted by ths fact that what more can a man do than lily down his life for '.thers.
