GIFTS FOR SOLDIERS.

APPRECIATION OF NEW PLYMOUTH'S EFFORTS. By the latest English mail, Mrs. C. H- Burgess, M.B.E. (Mayoress of New Plymouth) received further letters expressing 'appreciation of the comforts sent by tho New Plymouth Women's Patriotic Committee t<j the men at the front. Sergeaant A. W.. McNeish (Wireless Corps) states that he received more than one parcel, but distributed the others to two less fortunate comrades. All are very grateful. A. W. Stuart (N.Z. Division, Y.M.CA., France), stated he had received ten cases of gift parcels from Mr. Hay for distribution, and on New Year's Day 600 men received parcels from us here, and "if you could have heard the words of appreciation you would have felt amply repaid for all your works."

Lieut -Colonel C. H. Weston, writing from Walton Hospital, acknowledged ( receipt of £SO to be spent on Christmas gifts for the soldiers. The money arrived too late for that purpose, and Colonel Weston had distributed £4O to hospital visitors, who are continually in need of small Bums for the men in the hospitals. The remaining £lO had been given to Mr- Nolan, of ffawera, for the benefit of men on leave from France. Col. Weston adds: It is very good of vou to work as- you have done, and over ('■' is side it is very much appreciated. New Plymouth must have more than held her own. Tn every way Taranaki can be proud of her share in the war." In connection with the appeal made on behalf of the hospital for blind soldiers at St. Dunstan's. Mrs. Burgess has received a letter from an Auckland friend who say that "only those who come into close contact with it really know what it does for the blind soldiirs and sailors. I think New Ztealaml should do more for this good cause. in the way of contributions." Mrs. Burgess will be pleased to receive and remit subscriptions.
