DOMINION'S PART.
SOMES ISLAND INQUIRY., STATEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER. Christciiurch, Last Night la replying to questions to-day, Sir ' Janet Allen explained that the inquiry Which Mr. Justice Chapman is holding concerning affairs at the Somes Island internment camp was occasioned by complaints wbicli German prisoners there Did made through the consular service to thMr Government, and which the German Government had placed before the British authorities. Personally, he thought the prisoners were well treated, hut it was considered desirable that an independent inquiry should be made, so that the Imperial Government's hands could be strengthened iu its dealings with Germany in regard to prisoners. That was why a judge of the Supreme Court, who was by virtue of hU position an independent person, had beta asked te hold the inquiry.
