In closing the Diet, Baron Terauchl tacitly admitted that should Germany menace Japan's or her Allies' interests in the Far East the Government would unhesitatingly protect them. He urged the nation to prepare for emergencies.

Mr Cliarles Lett, a very well-known settler in the Wellington j» district, was found drowned in the Wellington harbor on Tuesday. He came to New Zealand as a boy 5 and afterwards for some considerable time 'lio farmed a big holding at Kaitoke, and later migrated to the Wairarapa, where he had a farm in tlie Masterton district- He was also the possessor of a farm in the Pahiatua district, where he was very well known. His wife predeceased Inm as lata as last year, and one of his son 3, Mr. John Lett, who went to the front with the A.1.F., was killed in action a few months ago. He leaves a family of ten sons and four daughters. The sons are, Messrs Charles and David Lett, of Pahiatua; Messrs W. S., W., 13., and-P. S. Lett, of Masterton; Mr. Henry Lett, of New Plymouth; Messrs Harold, and Donald Lett, of Sydney; and Mr. Herbert Lett, a farmer in the Hawke's Bay district. The daughters arc: Mrs. WLawrence, of Pahiatua; and the Misses Lett (2), of Pahiatua.
