HAWERA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Hawera, March '27. A ease of interest to hotel proprietors and others engaged the attention of Mr. \V. It. Haselden, SM, at Hawera "yesterday, when Miv-. Cramp, licensee of the Central Hotel, pleaded not guilty to a charge of exposing liquor for sale'on the 12th inst., when the premises were required to be closed. Mr. G. Ryan represented defendant, and Sergeant Till the police. Kvidence for the police was tendered by Sergeant Till and Constable Willets, who both deposed to visiting the hotel and finding four men in the bar, which was lit up- The police, however, did not see any signs of liquor being served to the men.

:vtrs. Cramp ftated that when she left the bar she had switched off the light, and when she returned to attend to some duties she found the bar lighted and the men there, the latter having gone in on their own initiative.

His .W'orship dismissed the information. The four men. Wm. Struthcrs, W. Hill, C- E. Holland, and J. Riley were then charged with being on the premises when these were required to be closed. Struthcrs' evidence was to the effect that he called there in connection with some letters, and that he was in the military office. His case was dismissed and the information laid against Hill was withdrawn. C. E. Hollard's plea was that lie had recently sold his business, and waited upon Mrs. Cramp in the hope of selling some sundries (coitl) in connection with the business. He had not been able to effect a sale, as the police followed in almost on hi-, heels. The SM. also dismissed this information. 4 fine of as was entered aeainst Rilev, It being shown that he had no real business there and merely accompanied ITollard, and. moreover, was the culprit who switched on the light to the bar.
