TO RESIST SUBMARINES.

A PROMISING INVENTION. A promising invention has been devised by Captain Coll McDonald, marine superintendent at Dnnedin, for the Union Steam Ship Company, with the assistance of Mr. Robert Constable, the company's naval architect. It is a new method of ship construction, which will, it is claimed, make a ve'sscl to withstand several shots from a torpedo before she could be sunk, and gives a ihargiu of 50 to CO prr cent safety to those on board such vessels by enabling them to leave at leisure in the ship's boats or be rescued by other vessels. Besides this, the probability would be that aid would be received before a submarine could launch a second torpedo. In any case, the operation of sinking would be very costly to the enemy.
