RAID ON SEAMEN.
PILLAGING GOODS ON SHIPS By Telegrapi -Press Association Christehureh, Last Night. As the result of" the raid yesterday it the seamen's quarters of oversea vessels ViVderick Edward Klkin and Walter Tul! were charged at Lyttelton to-day witl stealing goods valued at £3 10s, thi property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Each of the accused pleadee guilty to taking possession of the gooda, but denied having broken into the cargo, In the course of his evidence, an officer on tho ship Stated that he had heard of very few cases of pillaging on vessel! while on the New Zealand coast. Hd did not consider the present offence a very Serious one, and he hoped that th« bench would not imprison tho men, at there was a shortage of seamen. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on each of the accused. The bench remark-, ed that the offence was a very sepoug. one. The articles had been stolen with' the full knowledge that they belonged to somebody else. It was surprising that a ship's officer should treat tho offence so lightly. It was certainly the wrong method of helping the authorities Jft preventing the pillaging of cargo. k
