AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
LADIES' COMMITTEE ENTERTAINED The president of the Taraanki Agricultural Society (Mr. ,T. S. Connett) paid a graceful compliment to the, ladies' committee and tin; general committee of th e society for their efforts in connection with the recent show, by entertaining them to afternoon tea on Saturday afternoon. The gathering was held at Messrs May and Arrowsmith's, and about 120 guests participated. The special purpose was to bring all those who had assisted the ladies in the innovation made at the show by the society doing its own catering, and to express appreciation of the success of the venture and of the fine result attained. Mr. Connett, in extending a welcome to the guests, said it was his wish to bring together all those who bad assisted in the undertaking and in bringing about the very satisfactory result- He said the receipts from the luncheon and afternoon teas had amounted to £231 15s, and the expenses to £BO 5s 3d, so that there was a profit of £145 7s fid. The soft drinks stall had taken £BS 13s lOd, and after paying £42 13s 7d expenses showed a profit of £23 2s 3d, and a total profit to the society from the stalk arranged by the ladies of £lflS 10s .(Applause.) When the ladies were first asked to undertake the work he did not anticipate the effort would be so successful. The general committee of the society, however, appreciated what the ladies had done, and had passed the following resolution at a meeting held earlier in the afternoon: That this committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society places on record its appreciation of the fine response made by the ladies of the district in undertaking, at our request, the catering and managing of the soft drinks stall on behalf of the committee at the recent autumn show; for the splendid financial results attained, and the far-reaching effect achieved thereby. Continuing, Mr. Connett said it was realised that the ladies bad been asked to undertake a matter of great magnitude, but ha himself had 110 conception of what it would really mean until he saw the work being .done . The response of the ladies had been simply wonderful. The fine weather, upon which such la function so largely depends, had, of course, assisted in both the preparation and the result. For the first time of such an undertaking he considered the result excellent. The far-reaching effect of the venture would be seen in the satisfaction of the members of the society in having such, excellent service, and also in the 'satisfaction to exhibitors and visitors, many of whom had expressed high opinions of the work done bv the ladies. He hoped it would not be the last time the ladies would assist the society in the same manner. (Applause.) Mr. \Y. Okev, secretary of the society, responded on behalf of the ladies, who, he said, were very gTateful for the committee's appreciation of their work, and were very pleased at the result achieved, although the work had been strenuous. They desired to record their thanks to all who had in any way assisted them, and especially to the officials of the Stratford A. and P. Societv for the very valuable information they had so willingly given. At the conclusion of the afternoon tea, Mr. W. B. Grant moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Connett for entertaining the committees. He was gratified at the response to the chairman's invitation, and said that while so many were keenly interested in the society there need be no fear for its future. The motion was seconded by Mr. TI. Benton and carried with acclamation. ,Mr. Connett suitably responded.
