The Citizens' Band gave a recital at the Ngamotu Palladium yesterday afternoon, in n.id of the fund for the relief of the Wairnarino settlers who suffered loss in the recent bush fires. The band had originally intended taking a collection for its own funds, *but /when the need of the settlers became known the members at once resolved to devote the proceeds of the recital to the Mayor's fund for the relief of the sufferers. The fine weather attracted a large crowd to Ngamotu, and the programme played by the band, which was. highly appreciated, included the exhibition quickstep "Ravenswood" . (Runnier), quickstep "Wagon Hill," overture "Silverdale" (Allan), suite "Nights of Gladness" (Ancliff), se"Qfanlinri Aflfim'ft Srmffs" (Ol*d*
Hume), intermezzo, "Tristesse d'Amour" (Tellicr), inarch "Roll of Honor" (Hawkins), and the cornet solo "The Sunshine of Your Smile" (Allitsen), played by Bandmaster McLcod. The collection amounted to approximately £2O Bs. The musical effect of the band's work was marred by the fact that the men had to play oil the loose, shifting stand, and the bandsmen expressed some dissatisfaction that nothing in the nature of a platform, to give them firm foothold, had been'provided. Up to Friday night the subscriptions received in Wanganui for the relief of the Wairnarino bush fires suflerers amounted to about £650. A thoroughcanvass is to be made on Wednesday. A lot of olothing, potatoes, etc., havo also been sent forward to Raetihi.
The wonderfully vivid and picturcsqpo Alaskan romances of Rex Beach's have been read by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world, and have placed him in the foremost rank of American authors. Undoubtedly his strongest and most widely read story is "The Barrier," which has been produced in picture form under the author's personal supervision, and is now the reigning film success of England and America. The picture closely follows the swift action, striking situations and romantic episodes of the book, and is a ( faithful portrayal of life in Alaska, when it was the last frontier of civilisation. 15.
