DEFENCE DEPARTMENT.
ARE CHANGES PENDING? (From Our Own Correspondent) Wellington, March 21. The Minister of Defence, who returned to Wellington to-night, after a trip in the north, gave no confirmation of the report that changes arc pending at Defence Headquarters. He said the statement that the present Commandant of the Forces would go to England in some capacity, and would be succeeded at the head of the forces here by an ollicer with field experience, brought from the front, was "mere rumor." Rumor may be lying on this point, but if so she is doing it rather convincingly, and with a considerable amount of apparently confirmatory detail. A change of the kind indicated would not be made abruptly, for it probably would involve many other adjustments.
