Mrs. Ann Burgess, Mayoress of New (Plymouth, has been created by Ms Majjosty the King a member of the fifth I class of the Order of the Dames of the Grand Cross, in recognition of her war services. Ever since the outbreak of war Mrs. Burgess has thrown herself' wholeheartedly into the work on behalf of the soldiers, giving up all her time, and organising operations in connection with the soldiers in the town and district, with marked success. No town in New Zealand has a better record for patriotic work than New Plymouth, and practically the whole credit is due to Mrs. Burgoss, who richly merits the distinction now conferred upon her. Ernest Wild, a member of Shaekleton's expedition, has been killed in a minesweeper in the Mediterranean. MrS. J. Eva, late of Vealo Road, has received advice that her son, 1 Private T. R. Eva, was transferred to the base depot, France, on February 20. Mrs. J. Lobb, of Westown, has been advised that her son, Sapper S. C. Iftbb, is expected to return to New Zealand in about a week's time. Mr. C. B. Morison, K.G., who recently underwent a rather serious operation at New Plymouth, and who lias since been recuperating in the Taupo district, has now returned to Wellington, and resumed his professional duties. The Chronicle reports the death at the age of 8:1 of Mr. Arthur Kincade, a Crimean and Maori wars veteran, and an old resident of Wanganui. Airs. Bowers, wife of Mr. G. Bowers, says the Stratford Post, had the misfortune to break one of her arms. The. accident was caused by Mrs Bowers falling, as a result of stepping in a hole while crossing a paddock. Mr. ,L K. Silby. of Riverlea, has v< ceived word by caWn that his son, Sergeant F. R. Pilby, of the instruction stall', Anzac training school, has just been admitted to hospital in France, suffering from fracture of the left leg. Mr. W. Eyre, who was at one time on the local stall" of the Union Steam Ship Company's ofliee, and who latterly was assistant purser on the Mocraki, has been appointed pui'Bei\ on the Taviuni, engaged in Australian coastal trade. Mr. R. H. Nolan writes to a Hawcra friend that he is duly carrying on his work on behalf of the New Zealand soldiers, and is in fairly good health, though anxious to sec the end of the war, and to get back to New Zealand. Mr. T. C. Street, of Okato, has received advice that his only brother, LanceCorporal 11. 11. Street, has received the Military Medal. Lance-Corporal Street enlisted over two years ago in Melbourne with the Australian Forces, and has been at the front ever since, never having been wounded.
