(From Our Own Correspondent.) PATRIOTIC i'liTK There was a splendid attendance at tlie .Recreation Grounds on Thursday last, the occasion being the patriotic fete. The idea of the fete was lirst siiggested by tlie ladies' committee, who sought the assistance of the men's committee, and together a moat successful function was carried out. The committee are grateful to the New Plymouth Pierrots for their splendid ser-'ices; lief ore they left the grounds they had disposed of about 700 parcels, and had worked off raffles for dinerent articles such as a box of sugar, a bag of (lour, a box of soap, etc, and in most cases about £4 was secured for eacli article, and at t|ie close of the day they were responsible for collecting a little over £IOO, which is most gratifying to all concerned. The exact figures are not available, but something over £240 was collected altogether. The following ladies presided over the different stalls :--Produee, Mesdames Allen, Leslie, Cold we'll, Davis, and Miss Stephens; afternoon tea, Mesdames Drown, J). Allen, Winficld, King, Jacomb, Hamcrton, Wilson, Cramer, and Misses Hamerton, Paulger, Wilson, Terry, Kiordan, and Allen; flowers, Mesdames Roberts, Messenger, Horner and Hobbs; soft drinks,, Mesdames Gow and Henry, and Misses Henry, Parker, Julian, and Mr. Nicholson.
A first-class sports programme for school children was carried out under Messrs Evans, Wagstaff, Preo, Ross, Humphrey, Lift, and Thomas, and following are the result.;: !ofi yards, boys (8 to 12).---First heat: J. A very pleasant function took place at the fire brigade station last Tuesday evening, when Captain Coldwell and Sec. Robb were presented with the silver bar marking seven years' active service. The presentation was made by Lieut. McLaggan, who emphasised the many sterling qualities of the recipients. Captain McLeod. of the Mosgiel brigade, has been spending a short holiday in the district.
