A BRAVE TARANAKI BOY.
HOW HE WON THE D.C.M. The following is an extract from a letter received by his mother from Sargcant S. C. Foot, D.C.M.: "You keep, asking me how I got the .D.C.M. Well, I can only give you a very little account of it, as if I were to tell you in detail it would take pages in writing. I will just simply say that our battalion had to take a village, and, during the course of it, I, with a party of eight men, found myself held up at a strong point held by a great many Germans. 'I was awfully afraid the Germans would see what a small party we were, and, attacking us, would surround and capture us all. Suffice it to say that we kept on sniping at the Germans, and killed several. Things seemed to be very quiet in their strong point, so two men and myself scouted up to and into it unobserved. We found that we had surprised the Germans with their arms not handy, so we covered them with _our rifles, and they all surrendered, together with some more we found in the dug-outs. I was able to send back 26 German prisoners in all. We also found that we had sniped fifteen. I was thus enabled to go forward with my party and establish a strong post, which I had been ordered to do. As I was in charge of the party I got the D.C.M., whilst another man, who gave me the most assistance, received the Military Medal." Since the above event, Sergeant Foot has several times distinguished himself,' winning a bar to the D.C.M.
