PERSONAL.
At Waipuku on Tuesday Mr. P. Guthrie, of the railway service, was entertained by friends and presented with a wristlet watch. Mrs. Kenny, of JEltham, lias just received word that her son, Private Arthur Kenny, has been invalided home and will reach New Zealand in two weeks' time. Miss Grace Warner, formerly teacher at Gisborue East and Hastings West schools, who successfully passed "D" in last January's examination, held in Dannevirke, has left for Dunedin and enters the training colle'ge. Miss Warner, who is only 17 years of age, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Ashton-Warner, the latter being tho schoolmistress at Umutaoroa.
By Thursday night's mail train Captain M. Urquhart, Gordon Road (on leave) and Sergeant It. Bishop, Tc >Popo (invalided) returned to Stratford. They were met by a large crowd of people, and were officially welcomed by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan). Prior to the dispersal of the crowd and on the call of the Mayor, three hearty cheers, were given for the returned men.
The death occurred at Wellington on U ednesday, after a long illness, at the ago of 55 years, of Mr. John Moginie Chambers, head of the firm of John Chambers and Son. Ltd. Mr. Chambers was born in England, and came to New Zealand as an infant with his parents. He returned to England to learn engineering with Tangye's. Ltd., Birmingham, afterwards coming back to New Zealand to join his father in establishing an engineering business in Auckland. He married a daughter of Sir Richard Tangye, who, with three children, survive him.
