OPUNAKE.
(From Oiiv Own Correspondent. The ordinary montiily of the Town lioard was held on Monday evening. Those present were: Messrs I.'. A Trotter (chairman), J- P. Burton, K. Thorpe, S. M. Cornish, 0. \V. Ro^er*. Tlil' board received two copies of susgesteu* mode! by-laws, suitable for a town the size of Opunake, from the Health Department, 'i'lie board appointed a special night nieetmir to consider the by-laws. Mr. Twogond, hvdro-ok'ctri;' engineer, wrote pointing oii„ the necessity of the hoard leaving an accurate knowledge of tlie gauge of water in the Waiau river, ag it was an important part, of the scheme. The board passed a resolution asking that the necessary procedure in connection witii the electric light scheme be facilitated. The board is desirous of having owners of water-rights Immedi•ttely consulted. Messrs Denham, Prosser Bros., and Ritson agreed to pay half cost of footpath (tar sealed)., The board decided to on with the won?. The I'ortilwer Co. (Opunake) wrote in reply to the board's communication that as the machinery was driven by waterpower they could not consent to have :be meter taken, but the chairman would meet the board and discuss the matter. The board's solicitor was requested to communicate with all persons connected with the water rights, so as to reach some finality. The matter has been hold up too long and the proposed lighting scheme is at a standstill in consequence. Mr.. MaeFarlanc, lessee of the town lighting scheme, intimated that he had forwarded four machines, and was drafting the lease as between himself and the board preparatory to confirmation of same. The Horticultural Society held a successful autumn show on Wedne>tiav. The principal prize-takers in cut blooms were Mesdames Moore, Mouri. Hodgson, and Thorpe, Mrs. Hodgson winnin? I he championship for roses. Mr. G. lbiylis won most points in potato classes, and Mr. ('ox, senr.. most points in vegetable scct'on. In cooking classes Mrs. Guy, Miss West, Mrs. Newman, and Mrs. Richards were the principal prize-winners, and Miss Fearon secured most points i n nrej serves. The decorative prizes were | divided between Mc-rh'iucs. Pettigrcw, Hodgson, Thorpe, and Miss fiearv.
