(From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, March 4. This morning the Mayor/(Mr. J. \V. McMillan) and Crs. J. Masters, 1). J. Malone, J. H. Thompson, 0. Jackson, S. B. Hunter, T.. Lawson, C. B. Walsh, and W. McDonald visited Hawera, where they were met and welcomed by the deputy-Mayor (Cr. L. A. Bono) and Cr. Morriacy. The object ol' the visit was to secure information regarding street improvements, and after the Mayor had reciprocated the remarks of Cr. Cone, the party motored over tiio Jlawera | borough, taking note of the roads, etc. Owing to some of the visitors having to return to Stratford, an invitation to Jtuy to dinner had to be declined, but tlie Stratford nien were hospitably entertained. *Tlio Mayor, seen this afternoon, said the asphalt roads of liawera weru a credit to tlie town. visitors had every "opportunity of inspecting the plant, material, etc., and he had no doubt this would be of good use to the council. Cr. Malone (Works Committee) thought that Hawera had become a model borough. Years back-, Hawera was lacking in nice wtilk.i, etc., but now the clean streets, fine buildings and excellent F>irks were a splendid testimonial to the progressive spirit of the recent councillors and ratepayers. •The promoters of the Gift Auction Sale are holding a meeting in the council chambers at - p.m. on Saturday, and request a big attendance of canvassers, committeemen, and others who worked to make the sale such a success. The secretaries advise that there are several push donations promised that have not vet come to 'hand, and hene to handle ;thesc before -Saturday, if possible, so as ■to..get on with the work ,of producing a balance-sheet. Sergeant 11. Masters (Mili. Modal), who has been home for a few days on furlough and had to report at Wellington, has done so, and lias? notified his relatives .that he has been discharged.
