STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, Feb. 28Rev. J. Clover, for some years a minister here, has been revisiting old friends. He left for south this morning by the mail train. Dr. Steven also left for south by the express. As mentioned previously his work will be undertaken by Dr. Fergusson. (Ralmerston North) assisted.by Dr. Cooper (Eltham). A little boy, just over two years, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Matcher, inglewood, whilst playing in the yard, came into contact with an axe, and as a result received such a gash to one of his lingers that the boy had to have it amputated. He is now making excellent progress. For some time past it has been felt that the returned soldiers in and around Stratford should 'lurVe some means of intercourse than the street verandah. Last night, a good muster answered a call and, as a result, to-night they intend holding a social in the Midhirst Hall. Mrs. Knwright, licensee of the hotel, who has a son back from the front, is supplying the supper. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, is understood to have accepted an invitation to be present The members of the Town Band held a meeting this week when several matters of interest to the band were discussed. It was resolved to hold another meeting again shortly. The conductor. Mr. L. Spurdle, has vaaencies for young players, and is well pleased with the progress of those young in experience, but possessing plenty of enthusiasm. The school picnic is being held to-day. The weather 'has turned out gloriously fine, and one and all, young and old, seem to be having a good time at the A. and P. grounds, which are at the /:isposal of the committee There are »ome who believe the committee 'might have chosen another day than one that clashed with the Taranaki Show, This was probably an oversight. An any rate', Mr. J. W. Boon, who happens' to be president of the A. and P., and chairman, of the- school committee, iras a visiter at the show yesterday, whilst to- a day the bookings from Stratford were in the neighborhood of 100. The town to-day was entirely deserted, a full holiday being observed. T. LAMASOX'S WEEKLY REPORT. Our readers are reminded of Miss Christie's final lecture on Friday evening, in the Medina Tearooms.' Those interested in the s.vmbology of the crucifixion should not miss this last opportunity of hearing and questioning the national lecturer of the Theosophical I Society. I The "Uean" haircuttor has proved a popular article in the household. Mr. C. E. .Tames, agejjt for this district, has been notified that the Government contemplates purchasing some for use with members of the Defence Department. It is a unique gift that would be much appreciated, particularly by those in the trenches, as with a gift of this description a soldier could always keep his hair clipped short, and thus be spared a good deal of misery and irritation. An invitation is given to all to see the "Ucan" haircutter.—Advt.
