NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council wits lipid last night. 'l'lic Mayor (Air. C. 11. Burgess) presided, and there were present: Crs. •I, Clarke, .). W. Ilayden, K. J. Hill, W. F. Short, E. Grilliths, A. W. Collis mid G. W. Browne. The meeting was held for the purpose of confirming a resolution previously carried, empowering the council to utilise tlit! unexpended portion of the .CIiOOO loan in forming and generally improving certain streets and footpaths within the borough, as already detailed. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by C'r. Griffiths, the resolution was unanimously confirmed. WORKS COMMITTEE, A meeting of the works committee was then held, the same councillors being present. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the New Plymouth Citizens' Band Committee wrote that the committee desired to purchase (instead of leasing) from the council a piece of land situated in Leach street, as a site for a band room.—lt was decided that a special valuation be made of the site, and that the offer of the band to purchase be accepted. The secretary of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote asking if the council would be willing to have Downe street, from its intersection with Morley street to West street, closed aa a street, and to give that portion of it to the board for its own purposes. It was recognised that the opening of Downe street to Morley street would be a costly matter, and it was thought it would be cheaper for the council to hand tliat section of the street over to the board.—The matter was referred to the streets sub-committee for consideration. In reference to a petition fron/W. J. Hontfyfield and seven others for a water service along the South road, the engineer reported that the length of the main required was twenty-six chains, and for approximately twenty chains no connections would be required for probably a long time. To be of service and lasting benefit, at least a six-inch main would be necessary, to serve both domestic and fire purposes. It is unlikely that either four-inch or six-inch pipes would be available for a long time. A two-inch jnqin for twenty chains and a. 1-inch .main for six chains would cost about X.'iOO. —It was decided to reply that the work could not be undertaken at the present time.
