THE PRICE OF PELTS.
A CONFERENCE PENDING. (Our Special Correspondent). Wellington, Feb. 22. Complaint has been made by farmers that they are selling lambs in the dark owing to lack of information regarding the price paid for pelts. .Referring to this point to-day, the Imperial Supplies Department explained that skins from stock slaughtered at freezing works are not commandeered. Slipcd wool iu requisitioned on a fixed schedule, the basis of, the prices paid being a 55 per cent, advanco on the average price during the period July 13, 1013, to January 14, 1914. Lambs' pelts are shipped to the United Kingdom when space is available, and are subject to free sale there. The freezing companies' sliped wool is bought for the Imperial authorities on sehedulo prices, on the basis already mentioned. Prices for lambs' pelts in London are regarded here as speculative. The local, price is about 3b each. The whole subjected the valuation and purchase of skins is to be considered by a conference that probably will meet in Wellington early next month. The Prime Minister has announced the conference, but the date has not yet been fixed.
