A London cable states that Sir Win. 'Mercer has been appointed president of the Pacific. Cable Hoard". Mr. Fred Collier, who is under engagement to return to Australia to rejoin Madame Melba in a.concert tour, leaves by the mail train to-morrow morning en route to Napier. Captain W. Champion, a member of a well-known seafaring family, who was familiar with the town 50 years ago, is at present on -a visit to Xew Plymouth. The many friends of Mr. Sidney Pitt, of Stratford,'and Miss A. M. Hcaly, of tlie Stratford Hospital staff, will, reports the Post, be interested to learn of their wedding engagement. Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer, who' was en route to Tauranga to attend the Dominion Fir? Brigade's Association conference, returned by the mail train on Friday night from' Mnrton owing to indisposition. A London cable reports the death of Earl Brassey. Few, if any, peers are more known throughout the world than was the late Lord Brassey, who was created a peer in 1880 and created an earl in 101.1. He was a noted yachtsman, and at one time Governor of Victoria.
' The Rev. W. A. Sinclair, prcsidenj of the Methodist Conference, leaves this morning for Dmiediii, where the Conference opens on Thursday next. Other local representatives to tlie conference are Messrs. W. Ambury and C. E. Bellringer. Mrs. W. Amhiirj- will represent the local .branch, of tlie" Women's Alissionary Auxiliary, whose annual meeting will take place simultaneously with the conference. Other Taranaki ministers going to conference are the Revs. CI. B. Hinton (Waitani), E. {>• Bhnniros (Hawera), and K. B. Tinslcy (Stratford).
