CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE* A meeting of the committee of the Central School was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present: Messrs S. (!. Snitli (chairman), 0. \V. Jlrowne, (!. 11. Dolbv, T. Ilanlgraves, L II Northern, F. Read, W. Hooker, !<'. Coleman (secretary), and B. I, Mcllroy (iieadmaster). An apology was received for the absence of Mr. V. Crifliths. The headmaster's report was as follows: The school resumed on February !> with nn attendance of ."•">(!. as against "iIH on the opening- day of last year. The average attendance for the week was r>ir>,fi, being ill.'/ per cent, of the roll, 002. Forty-four new pupils have been admitted and 8C have leff, including •";; of last year's -Standard (!. The r.amber on the roll at Vogeltowii is 4", and the average for last v."c!c 3fi. f'.ix -pupils have been transferred i'.i the Central, six have lei'!, and 1(1 new pupils admitted. Miss (!. Doile, the additional assistant appointed on account of the increased attendance, too!; np her duties on the opening day. She is taking part of Standard 5. the largest class in the sidioo! Misses A. George nyd A. K. Warren, p-.ipil-ter.cher.-, left at the "end of the year, and their places have be?!i taken by Misses K. BulLrd, L. Corney, and .1. Hyndman. I regret to announce the resignation of Miss Dempsey, our fourth assistant. During her nine years at the school she ■his been most successful in her teaching, and has earned the love and respect of her pupils. Outside the ordinary school work she has rendered most valuable assistance in connection with the girls' games, carnivals, and other entertainments, ar.d her place will be ban' to fill.

The secretary was instructed to write Id Miss Dempsey expressing hi"h appreciation of her good services to the school and regret at her resignation. A sub-committee was appointed to deal with necessary repairs, and it was decided .tn put down some concrete at the exit from the playground to the flat, .With regard (o the complaint of the Borough Council as to dust blowing off the ground, «the suggestion to tar and sand a considera'ole area was not favorably received, and it was decided to consult .Mr. fi lirowne, agricultural instructor, in the matter. The headmaster referred (o an article on libraries for schools, and said that tho books supplied from the New Plymouth Carnegie Library were not verv suitable and were often much worn.— The chairman promised to interview the librarian of the Juvenile Public Library In Wellington., during his forthcoming visit, in order to obtain details of suit able books to be recommended to the Library Committee for purcliase.
