FITZROY SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETIXO. Tlic first monthly meeting for the year of the Eitzroy -School Committee wua held on Monday night. There were present: Messrs \V- G. lieid (in the ehuir), I. Aroa, W. Grillitlis, 11. Grayling, and F. Duckworth (secretary), Apologies for absence were received from Messrs 1!. Day and V. Ardern. The headmaster (Mr- 0. Johnson) reported that the school re-opened with a roll of 208 scholars, being SI more than at the commencement of the previous year. Miss Allan, the additional assistant, had commenced her duties, as had also the Misses Gibson and Rawlinson, who replaced the Misses Lawn and Leech. He expressed appreciation of the work of the caretaker during the holidays, and also of the work of Messrs T. Giddy and J. Walker in attending to the asphalted portion of the playground. The report also stated that it was absolutely necessary to utilise the gymnasium as a class room, although it was quite unsuitable, and the iheadmaster recommended that application ha made to the Education Board to have the building lined (at least half-way up), to have the means of lighting and •ventilating improved, and some means of heating installed. The summer season made necessary some kind of shelters in the playground in order that lessons eould be given outside, and it was suggested that a sub-committee should he appointed to confer with the board's overseer as to design and cost, with a view' to their erection at the earliest possible date. The desirability of re-commencing the scripture classes was also mentionedThe matters of the school drainage, the erection of a bubble drinking; fountain, and the erection of a destructor were left in the hands of Messrs H. Gravling, R. Dav, and the headmaster to deal with. The question of the overcrowded state of the school was discussed, and Messrs W- G. Reid. H- Grayling, and the headmaster (Mr. 0. Johnson) were appointed to wait on the Education Board at its next meeting, with a view to having the building enlarged.
