EGMONT SUMMER MEETING. FIRST DAY. Perfect summery weather favored the Egmont Racing Club for the opening of the summer meeting yesterday, and the attendance was the largest in the history of the club. The lawns and enclosures were beautifully fresh and green, and the (lower beds were a mass of color, showing the good attention given to the appointments by the club's caretaker, Mr. Alf. Morse. The racing traek was in good order, and fast times were recorded throughout the day. The hurdle race, one mile and three-quarters, was run in 3min 15sec; the Egmont Stakes, six furlongs, in lmin 132-6 eec; and the Egmont Cup, one mile and a half, in 2min 34 2-ssec. Mr. O'Connor did the starting in his usual first-class style, and Mr. Hartgill filled the judge's box to everybody's satisfaction. The handicappcr, Mr H. Coyle, scored a distinct success, his adjustments being productive of keen racing and close finishes. The victory of Chortle in the Cup was deservedly popular, the big horse carrying his 9.5 to the front in great style. Both horse and rider received a hearty greeting on returning to scale. One protest wis entered during the day. That was against Ju Jitsu, winner of the Ladies' Purse, it being alleged that her rider, E. Cleaver, was not eligible to hold a gentleman rider's license. After taking evidence, the judicial committee dismissed the protest, and ordered the deposit ( £2) to be forfeited. The Jlawera Citizens' Band supplied excellent music, and the catering was up to the Duatin standard. Results:

George's Stakes, 'Futurity Stakes. Essendon Stakes, C- M. Llovd Stakes,' Governor's Plate, and 0. B. Fisher Plate. NOTES ON SECOND DAY. (By "Moturoa"). Acceptances for tho ttecond day are very fair. Six remain in the Atkinson Memorial. Impediment ia well treated with 8.9, and Volo, who had r. bad run on the first day, will find many friends with 7.0. There are 12 acceptors in the Waimate Handicap, including Acre, who rah well in the Egmont Stakes yesterday, and Movement, who may bo expected to race better under a lighter scale of weight. Only four remain in the Hawer:\ Stakes. Estland, v/ho is slightly *>-*» will probably start a hot iavcrito. The Hurdles have attracted a good fbld, and Plying Camp and Parewanui should both have a fair run over the mile aud u. half distahce. In the Welter, Glorify may get a better passage than on the first day, and local punters will probably fancy Iceberg as well. A field of 22 remain in the Scurry, in-luding Turpin-i iie, who ran well yesterday. Tempo, a maiden from Wanganui, is aleo well spoken of. The Farmers' Plate should be well contested, Mattock and Huzza probably being a cut above the others.
