John Devlin, being run down by a motor car. Devlin was much knocked a'bout and had to be removed to the hospital, where he had his injuries attended tb. To-day Devlin's condition has improved somewhat. A contingent of four—Messrs J. W. McMillan (Mayor), Cr. E. Walter (chairman' of the County Council), and R. Masters (chairman of the Education Board), with J. W. Boon chairman of the school committee)—left for Wellington this morning on business conected with the new school site, etc. They hope to return home by Wednesday's express.
After being engaged on the staff of St. Mary's Home for the last twelve months, Miss Fyfe lias returned to Timaru. During her stay in Stratford she assisted in several patriotic and other concerts, and she has the good wishes of Stratford musicians in her future movements. Amongst the soldiers returning here recently is Sergeant E. R. Robertson, who left with the Bth Reinforcements. Ife was invalided home through injuries received at Flers and Gravenstafel, the last in October. He leaves again for Hanmer shortly for treatment. Sergeant "Robertson is fairly well known in tliis district, having been engaged in farming at Tahora previous to the war. J At the patriotic tea rooms on Satur-l day £3 was taken, whilst the Mart secured £9. A competition for a cake donated by Mrs. Wihitmill was won by Mrs. Anderson. Mr. R. Mcßeth, engaged for the past two years as operator for the pictirrea here, wa.s the recipient of two presentations last night. The first was a goldmounted cigarette-holder, the second being a- wristlet watch. These were made on behalf of tflie picture staff and Mr. and Mrs. Foley respectively. The gifts Were accompanied by expressions" of goodwill for th? future by Mr. Foley (manager), sentiments 1 hat were heartily endorsed bv the comrades present, A very pleasant hour was spent. T. Lamason. advertises sale for Thnrsday next, Feb. 14. on behalf of Mr. Saddler. Hamlet Street South. The furniture is of the best, several pieces being oak.
