HAWERA.
(Our Special Correspondent). Hawera, Feb. 11. At the Hawera County Council meeting on Saturday some discussion ensued in connection with the proposed new (extensions necessary to meet the requirements of the town. Whilst nothing was known as to the ultimate cost, C'r. Winks (also a member of the Hospital Board) assured the council it could expect increased levies to meet the extra cost. One would think that the present was hardly an opportune time for a dance, but Te Roti does not hold that opinion, a very enjoyable dance being held there oil Friday. The music by Airs. Hook (of Hawera) was first-class, and this, with an excellent floor, were the two factors that assured the success of the dance, which was held in aid of Red Cross funds. A waltzing competition attracted much attention and plenty of competitors, the award of the judges going to 1 Miss Dunn and Mr. Smith. There is a fine display" of trophies (cups, medals, etc.) on show here. These exhibits are the prizes donated by members and others interested in the A. and P. show here next week. They are all worthy of the association, and from what one can gather the competition should be quite equal to those of the past. The president (Mr. A. h. Campbell), the secretary (Mr. A. Perkins), and the executive are doing their best to make results come up tc past years. A-short, but Very generous, downpour occurred last night. It might he likened to a golden rainfall, as it was bndl.v needed, and' considerably freshened up the pastures, which were presenting a very withered appearance.
