APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE. GENEROUS OFFER BY RED CROSS SOCIETY., His Worship the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. C. II- Burgess) took advantage of a meeting of ladies held yesterday in. connection with the Pukekura I'ark Fete Day to place Before those present an appeal which had reached him on belialr of the Scottish Women's Hospital for War Service. Although a general invitation to attend had been issued iioine two or three only more than those at the previous meeting attended, and the gathering consisted entirely of ladies. The Mayor presided, and there were present Mcsdames Burgess, Ncalc, Eberlet, Dockrili, R. Cock, Fargie, E. A. Walker, R- W. 1). Robertson, D. Morrison, and Roekell, Misses Marshall, Sole, Stephenson-Smith; Curtis, and Pardv. Mr. Burgess, in explaining the appeal, said a meeting had been held in Wellington, at which the scheme had been initiated. A representative committee of leading citizens had been set up, and thai committee had resolved to bring the appeal under the notice of all the patriotic committees. The fund had received the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs, and the appeal would therefore Ih> treated as all patriotic appeal severe treated. Information had been received that Hawera had already made its effort on behalf of the fund, and succeeded in raising the sum of £11)0. The Mayor outlined some of the work done by the Scottish' Women's Hospital, vMch, said, must appeal to everyone. Mrs. E. A. Walker, on behalf of the Red Cross Society, said that their committee were prepared to hand over the takings of the Mart for one Saturday to the fuijd, and suggested that a Sc.itch Day shotild be arranged on a wider scale than the usual operations of the Mart, including stalls in various parts of the town Mrs. Walker also intimated that the Red Cross Society was prepared to give a donation of £IOO. It was resolved to work for the fun 3 on the lines suggested by Mrs. Walker, and Saturday, February 23, was fixed upon as the day for the appeal. Those present formed themselves into a committee of management, Mesdames C. 11. Burgess, E. A. Walker, and 11. Cock being appointed an executive committee. The Mayor thanked the ladies for taking up the appeal, and referred with special appreciation to Mrs. Walker's generous offer on behalf of the Red Cross Society.
