An Auckland press message reports the death of Mr. John Ford Harllami, for 12 years secretary to the Auckland Raciiig Club. The London Press Bureau announces' l.liat a baronv of the United Kingdom litis been conferred upon Sir Jolm Forrest, of South Australia, in recognition of his long and distinguished services t,o the Empire. "His Honor, Mr. Justice Edwards, leaves for Wangainii by the mail train this morning. He will preside at Hie criminal sessions of the Supreme Court there, which open next week. Rev. Father Gilbert, M.A., who has been appointed rector of St- Patrick's College, had a distinguished scholastic career, and is the first, old boy of the college to occupy the position of rector. The outgoing rector, Rev. Dr. Kennedy, U.A., lias been appointed principal of the Marist Fathers' Seminary, Greenmeadows—Press Association.
Opportunity was taken at a meeting of the vestry of St. Mary's Chursh during the week to bid goodbye to Mr. T. ft. Hirst, who has been a member of the Vestry and also occupied tiie position of vicar's warden. Mr. Hirst has also been a member of the. choir, and on behalf of the Vestry and choir the vicar (RevF. C Harvie) presented Mr. Hirst with a cheque as an expression of appreciation of his services to St. Mary's. Mr. Hirst leaves this morning for Invercargil'-
Trooper H. Stevens, who arrive*! in Hawera on Thursday evening after being about thirty-eight months on active service, was accorded a hearty welcome homo by the citizens, who turned out in large numbers The platform was festooned with 'bunting. As the train drew in cheers were given for the returned soldier and his comrades going north The Mayor (Mr. E. Dixon) briefly extended a cordial welcome to Trooper Stevens, and said the people were proud of his long service. Trooper Stevens thanked the Mayor for his kind words of welcome.
In the casualty list published yesterday the following Tarannki names appear: Killed in action, F. L. Kiinbell (F. (J. Kimbell, Hawera, father). Previously reported missing, now reported reasonable to suppose dead, C. E. Taylor (T. Taylor, New Plymouth, mother). Wounded, A- E. Swinton (K. M, Swinton, New Plymouth, mother), V. Hannah (M. Hannah, Lower Mangorci, mother), 11. S, Kirton (R. Kirton, Fitzroy, father). Slightly wounded, remaining with unit, •T. It. Miller (S. Miller, Kaupolc'onui, father), C- F. Laurence (W- Laurence, Tariki, father). The hospital and progress report contains the following names: Still seriously ill, R. Jones. Not severe cases, K. W. Baigent (Hawera), J. P, Bilski, H. E, Roper (Stratford), and F. Treves.
