MEETING OP WORKS COMMITTEE. The wWks Committee oi lIk: New Plvmoutli night. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. 11. Murgess), Crs. J. Clarke, J. W. Hayden, J'. .1. Hill, \V. V. Short, E. Griffiths, li. J. Dearo, ami 11. W. Browne. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Collis. STREETS SUB-COMMITTEE. The following report was submitted )>v the works sub-committee: Tar Sprayer.—Th«s committee la of tile opinion that it is desirable to pnr-i-liasi' ,ii tar sprayer, and the engineer was instructed to order at once, with a view of saving any possible delay in ..ping, the tar sprayer from Richardson and MeCabe, Wellington, at £325 f.o.b. Melbourne. Devon Street Path-..—The engineer was instructed to proceed with the tarring of Jcvon Street paths as expeditiously as possible. ■pile" engineer wrote regarding the tar-i-ng of .Devon Street footpaths that he found it most conducive to economy to open up only such small lengths as could be filled over within tile day. He propovd to use his discretion as to the opening up of such Sections as he felt demanded immediate attention. He hoped that if there was inconvenience to pedestrians it would be as light as possible, and lie also suggested that the public should assist by using the footpath on the opposite side while the work was being done. He referred to the fact that unthinking people had whiled away their time poking holes with sticks or umbrellas into the newly-laid material, causing unnecessary damage and making it essential to bring back workmen to make good. The Mayor said that the tar-sprayer had been ordered by the engineer, and the committee felt confident the council would approve its action in authorising the purchase. On his motion, seconded by Or. Rrowne, the action of the committee was endorsed and the report of the committee was approved. CORRESPONDENCE, The Railway Department locomotive engineer wrote, in reply to the council's letter regarding tires caused by sparks from railway engines, that all the locomotives were fitted with spark arresting appliance.? of the most approved type.— Received.
R. C. Hughes wrote that in. 1014 some Vivian street, ratepayers, including himself, had requested the council to carry out some improvements in that part of Vivian street between C'arrington road and Brougham street, including tin; kcrbing and channelling of the north side. In September th™ council had written that the improvements to Vivian street could not he carried out until the Cnrringtor. :'oad formation was effected. The writer stated that lis the work on Carrmgton road was now Heading completion lie hoped the work on Vivian street would he dou; without, further delay.—The engineer reported that to make a job of the street it would bonecessary to re-grade it before laying the kerbing and channelling The whole eof'. would be about £lO2 19s 2.1. He j thought the work was not specially urgent. Cr. Short said that if the work was done now. in conjunction with the Carrington road formation, it would be less expensive. He also urged the widening of the bridge and.- putting down a concrete footpath. The Mayor said the council had as much work in hand as It could do within the present year He thought the engineei might be asked to prepare an estimate regarding the widening ol the bridge. lie moved that a reply be sent to Mr Hughes that the matter would he taken into consideration in connection with next year's work. The motion was seconded by Cr. Clarke and carried. Cr. Short then moved that the engineer lie instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of widening the Vivian street bridge. He thought if it was done now if would assist in getting the grade from the bridge to the centre of Carriugton road. The Mayor said it would be a pity to touch the bridge unless it was decided to make it a fair width. Cr Browne seconded,tile motion, which was carried.
A petition was received from 42 ratepayers of Cameron street asking that the footpaths be repaired before the coming winter.—The cngineet reported tlmt the council had authorised the expenditure to re-grade, gravel, and kerb and channel both sides of the street from Courtenav Street to Avenue road, and also to repair the road between Lemon street and Ayenne road. Tho latter work would be put in hand as soon as possible, and the tcerbing and channelling either in the late"- summer or early autumn HARBOR BOARD EXCHANGES. Cr. Griffiths wrote to the effect that a'subcommittee consisting of the Mayor, Cr. Clarke and himself had had an informal meeting with the chairman of the Harbor Board (Mr. Newton King) regarding an exchange of sections between the council and the harbor board. Tho proposal was that the board should transfer to the council sections 4, 5, 0, 7. and 8, opposite the railway station in St. Aubyn street, together wit>. the adjoining sections 20, 27. 28, 20, and 30, and in exchange the borough council should transfer to the board property of an equal value. Sub-divisions 1. 2, and 3 of sections 2535. 2336, ancl 2337 were suggested as being possibly suitable. though some adjustment as to value migbt need to be made. It was decided to communicate with the nnrhor board in terms of the subcommittee's suggestions, in order to set the proposal in proper order.
GEXERAL. Tt was resolved, on the reoommemltition of the borough inspector, that the regulations for controlling the mcc truffle lie the same as those made for thn last Christmas meeting. It was also resolved that as Lemon street had been recently repaired the trafllc\be kept off that street on race day*. An application from the Taranaki Motors, Ltd., for permission to erect n sign over the footpath in front of their promises m St. Auhyn street was declined on account of the proposed sign not conforming witl the Hv-lff as. The secretary of the North Taranaki Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society wrote asking if the council would receive a deputation from the society with a request for the free use of'the municipal baths for the final of the Taranaki schools life-savin!* competitions.—Tt was decided to refer (he letter to the Baths Committee, with noww to net
