PRICE OF BUTTER.
CONFERENCE OF PRODUCERS AND MERCHANTS. ■-.' (From Our Own Correspondent) Wellington, Feb. \, Butter producers and merchants held ft-'conference- in Wellington yesterday for-.'Mie discussion of the relative positions of suppliers to the New Zealand market and the exporters, and they have made certain representations to the Prime Minister. The position admittedly presents difficulties, the export price being rather better than the retail price, but it may be stated confidently that the Government will not (igree to an increase in the local retail price beyond the maximum already fixed, that is., Is 8d per lb. I If the suppliers cannot adjust the matter among themselves, the GoveniAient will be prepared to take action. Itsr-facheme would be to %ring all the butter, under the Imperial purchase scheme and then release supplies for the local market, with a fixed maximum retail price. Mr. Massey has already stated;- that he does not believe it js rioceseary for 3d a lb to be added to the,:, priee of the butter between the supplier and the consumer, as at present.
