OBITUARY.
MR. HAL GOODACRE. The death occurred with startling suddenness yesterday morning of Mr. Hal Goodacre, an old and highly respected citizen of New Plymouth. For some little time past Mr. Goodacre, who was (i2 years of age, had been under medical treatment, but still he was able to attend to his business as usual, and had continued to take a prominent and active part in connection with tho various organisations with which he was associated. On Tuesday evening Mr. Goodacre, who was a keen bowler, enjoyed a game of bowls on the town green before going to his home at Westown. 2le was about again as usual yesterday morning, and motored down to the boot factory about 10.30. Shortly after his arrival at the factory Mr. Goodacre had a seizure, fir. Blackley was immediately summoned, but death ensued within a few minutes. Mr. Goodacre, who was a native of Derbyshire, learned his trade at Leicester, and was one of six men chosen to proceed > Germany to start a boot factory there on English lines. In 1874 he came to New Zealand by the ship .Itssaj'e. landing at Auckland, where he remained about two years. From there he went to Wanganui, and later to Patea and Hawera. About 30 years ago lie came to New Plymouth, and, in partnership with the late Mr. Philip Carthcw, founded the Egmont Boot and Shoe Company. Some years later Mr. Carthew dropped out of the business, and Mr. Goodacre has carried it on himself. He was always interested himself more or less in public matters, but more especially lias identified himself with the prohibition movement, and latterly has taken a warm interest in the Y.M.C.A. He has been a member of the Patriotic Cominittea from the first.
