BOROUGH A special meeting of the Borough Council waS held last evening to consider the loan proposals for street Improvements in Broadway. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. J. Masters (Deputy-Mayor) presided, other councillors present being; A. Coleman, D. J. Malone, .f. H. Thompson, C. Jackson, T. Lawson, S. B. Hunter, C. B. ft'alsh and W. McDonald After brief discussions, the following resolutions were carried: (1) Authorising the raising of a £15,000 loan; (2) striking a special rate as security for the said loan; (3) provision for the creation of a sinking fund in connection therewith, ai.d appointing a commissioner for such fund; (4) authorising the sealing and signing of the debentures to be issued in respect to the loan. Council advised that neither of their engineers could be spared to make a report on the suggested street improvements.—Received. The works committee was instructed to request the chief engineer to the Public Works Department to suggest a suitable man, or to spare one of his own oflicers. It was also empowered to purchase a portable engine for the crusher. GENERAL. A very painful accident occurred at Lowgartii on Saturday, the victim being the eleven-year-old son of G. A. Eagles. From what can bo gathered, the bov, Herb., got his right hand crushed, and, from the palm, cut otT, through getting it in a drill. The boy was brought to the hospital, where, under the treatment of Dr. Steven, lie is making very good progress. The amputation was a clean one. Returned soldiers in and around Stratford will be pleased to learn that a branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association is being organised in Stratford, Mr. T. Sheahan being empowered to enrol members. Branches already exist at New Plymouth and Jlawera, and the formation of a branch here will permit a delegate to attend the conferences to be held at New Plymouth each month. The next contingent to proceed to camp (the Thirty-sixths) leave on February (i, and the following local men are due to entrain here that morning: L. H. Caskey, N. H. Downs, F. H. Gall, W. H. Linn, L. Marfell, D. McK. Smith, T. 11. S. Wilson, R. Wells, J, E. Young. From Midliirst, L. S. JlcAsev. The yards of the Farmers' Co-opera-tive Society have recently been in the eharge of carpenters, and numerous sheep pens Ijave been added, which will facilitate the work of selling. The annual fair will be held on February S, and the yards will be found to be as commodious as any in the district. The netfly-appointcd engineer of the Borough Council (Mr. E. F. Hollands, of the Lake Coleridge power station, Christchurch) arrived in Stratford on Monday evening. It is understood he will commence" his duties almost immediately. The Deputy-Mayor and several councillors met Mr. Hollands on his arrival. It is very frequently a perplexing dii(\ in trying to discover just what woiilq please him for a birthday gift. Don'l trouble any longer, but just hasten to C. E. James' warehouse, and if he prefers a pipe you will find the best varieties here, ditto smokes.
