GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL WAR FILM AT THE EMPIRE. "SONS OF THE EMPIRE.'' There are probably few programmes of war pictures in existence as fine as "Sons of the Empire," which will appear at the Empire to-morrow and Thursday evenings with a special matinee at '2.30 Thursday afternoon. From beginning to end these pictures are alive wltn interest, and in a great many instances they have the peculiar quality of thrill that attaches to the living record of battle. The pictorial outline of a great offensive operation is elaborately treated, so as to give the fullest possible impression of the course of events. . It opens with the preliminary spoiling of the German trenches, working up to a terrific storm of fire, and passes through all the stages of the attack, as wave after wave of troops move* over No Man's Land into the fierr.ian trenches. The subsequent "cleaning up" of the battlefield, the return of wounded, the fetching in of Olerman prisoners, and the triumphant progress hc...e t ? the begrimed tanks, closes the episode. 'Pictures of the fleet, including a number taken shortly after the Battle of Jutland, give thrilling reminders of the patience and labor exacted from the Roval Navy in guarding Britain on the seas, and are crowded with interesting detail. "Sons of the Empire" is being exhibited by the Y.M.C.A., and the whole of the net proceeds will be devoted, under the direction of the Minister for Internal Affairs,? to providing comforts for fighting men at the front or wounded and convalescent in New Zealand and abroad. The box plan is available at Collier's. Price.? of admission arc D.C. Is (Id, stalls )«. Circle seats may be reserved without extra charge. THE EMPIRE. LAST NIGHT OF OLIVE THOMAS IX ''AN EVEN BREAK." The present Empire attraction is the gav picture, "An Even Break," wherein lOlive Thomas appears as the centre of a bevy of very beautiful girls. The production sets a pretty fast pace as a portrayal of high life, and the very fine mountings of many principal scenes hold the interest in a remarkable way. Besides the beautiful interior of big cabarets, the coteries of pretty girls and the amazing variety of happy dar.res, there is many an element of sensation in the picture, which in the mere range of its effects and the masse-, of lit scenery surpasses anvtlu.:;; that could lie produced on the legitimise stage. Everything in the cabaret semes i< i\,iit up to standard. It would seem thai, these great informal dining palaces, with their glittering ware and spotless naperv, their multi-colored lights, the stages- where lovely girls whirl through splendid dances, were taken from real life, and the tout ensemble is a spectacle that stands alone. Miss Olive Thomas is the central figure in this attractive screening. A thrilling episode of the serial story, "'The Secret of the Submarine," and a gazette of recent evnts adds variety to the programme which will be finally screened to-night. EVERYBODY'S. A FINE FOX FEATURE, "LOVE A\D HATE." The star item on the new programme at Everybody's to-night and to-morrow will be the powerful Fox drama, "Love anu Hate,'' featuring two favorite movio artists, Bertha Kaliclt and Stuart Holmes, [t is a powerful drama, rich in strong situations, and with a fine climax. The settings are a lenture of the production. The aceompaning pictures include a highly humorous comedy, "A Rascal's Wolfish Way." in .vhicli Svd. Chaplin has the chief role.
