I GENERAu There are many readers of these lines who will learn with regret that .frank Kirkwood, only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Ivirkwood, Piakau Park, Stratford, is reported killed in action on January 0, at the age of 20 years. Private Kirkwood was always keen on enlistment, ar.d endeavored to get away when 18, but was not taken. He sailed with the 28th Reinforcements. When in France he ex- j pected to meet, his uncle, LieutenantColonel J. G. Kirkwood, D.5.0., who was then in a hospital, recovering from the effects of gas. From advice received, lie in all probability met his uncle before making the supreme sacrifice. Frank Kirkwood was educated at the Normal School, Auckland, and Stratford District High School. After leaving school he was for some time on the stair of the Bank of Australasia here, and also at the Whangamomona branch. Deservedly popular, a promising future loomed ahead for the deceased soldier, who, like many others, has "gone west 7 ' in the effort to secure a lasting peace for humanity. After being stationed at Whangamomona during the last six years, Constable Scannell has received notice of his promotion to Manaia. Farmers and others out east will regret to lose the services of their constable, but nevertheless will be pleased to know that he has thoroughly merited the promotion. Another fine consignment of sheep was railed into Stratford this afternoon. With four engines, a long string of carriages, trucks, etc., and crowded platform, a stranger would be pardoned for believing that here was the busiest town in Taranaki. If not the busiest, it certainly was the noisiest, and a photograph of the animator scene would have proved a good advertisement for the town, and its importance as a railway centre. T.
