• A HEALTHY POSITION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Postmaster-Genera] to-night mads available figures for the Post Office Havings Bank for December, 11)17. "It will lie seen," lie said, "that there is an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £343,500, compared with £236,137 for December, 1 11*10. Considering we aro in the fourth i year of the war, and that very heavy withdrawals have been made for the purpose of enabling small depositors to invest in the last war loan and in war loan certificates, it will be seen this index is a healthy one. The total amount of deposits in the month of December was £1,405,511. Jf that average were maintained for the Whole of the year it would amount to £17,000,000 in the year. The average may or may not be maintained, but in any c-ase the figures are a clear indication that there is a considerable amount of money in small amounts in the country available for savings. The return of'business of the Post office Savings Bank for December, l!tl7, is as follows, the corresponding figures for December, 1910, beiug in parentheses: Deposits, £1,40.),.i1l (£1,339.730); withdrawals, £ 1,061,0n 1 ( £1.103,5(13), excess of deports, £543,500 (£236,137).
