SYNOD OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CLERGY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Jan. 21. The Diocesan Synod of tho Roman Catholic clergy- of Duuedin passed a resolution recording their appreciation of the ability and spirit with w*hich the New Zealand Tablet is conducted, and expresing their conviction of the necessity of openly declaring and boldly defending Catholic rights, especially Catholic education rights, which have been ignored hitherto by the New Zealand Government and political parties, and approving of the strong, self-reliant and self-determined nttitude taken by the present editor of the Tablet. REORGANISATION OF A SOCIETY. Christchurch, Last Night. The grand council of the Now Zealand Locomotive Engineers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association has decided to give effect to a reorganisation of the association, to come into effect as soon as the present executive committee can make arrangements. Mr. MeArley was appointed secretary, and he is to take up his headquarters in Wellington. LABOR DEMANDS WEBB'S EXEMPTION. Christchurch, Last Night. There was a long discussion at the meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labor Council on a proposal to protest against Mr. P. C. Webb, M.P., being subject to military service. Finally the following motion was passed, a strong minority voting against it: "That this council supports the miners' demand for the exemption of Mr. Webb from all military service, in consequence of the inability of the Government to All Mr. Webb's position, and that every member of Parliament be asked to resign and place his position in the hands of his constituents at a bye-election if drawn in the ballot, before asking for exemption."
