WAR BURSARIES.

I . REGULATION GAZETTED. The following regulations covering the ftward of war bursaries are gazetted:— A bursary may be awarded under these regulations to a young person of either sex who is certified by the War Pensions Board to -be the dependant of a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces who has been killed through active military service, or who as the result of such services suffered disablement the nature and extent of which, in the opinion of .the board, warrant the award of a bursary to the dependant, and—(a) Who is qualified to receive free education at technical classes other than the classes of a technical high school; or (b) Who is qualified to hold a free place ag a secondary school, a district school, or a technical high Bchool; or (c) Who, being under the age of nineteen on the nearest first 'December, is qualified to receive (i)' a university bursary or (ii) an educational bursary. A young person who is qualified under ono of the paragraphs (a), (b), or (c) above, and has accordingly been admitted to free education or to a free place, or has been awarded a university or an educational bursary, shall, so long as ho complies with the regulations per-' tAining to such free place or "bursary, receive a monetary grant in aid of necessary incidental expenditure incurred during the period of his attendance, as follows: If qualified under paragraph (a), an allowance of £1 10s for each year in whlWi the requirements of a free jjlace are fulfilled, provided that the allowance may be increased to £3 if a grouped course approved under the regulations) for technical instruction and l occupying not less than four hundred hours a' year is taken • if qualified under paragraph! (b), an allowance at the rate of £5 per annum; if qualified under paragraph' (c), tin allowance at the rato of >£lo per annum. If, in the opinion of the Director of Education a young person to whom these regulations apply is obliged to live away from home in order to prosecute his studies, ho shall further be entitled to receive, in quarterly or half-yearly instalments, iby way of boarding allowance, a payment no exceeding £ls for any yaar if ho regularly attends day classes constituting a grouped course approved under the regulations for technical instruction and occupying not less than four hundred hours a year, or a payment at the rate of £3O per annum if he regularly attends a secondary school, a district high school, or a technical high school, or if he is the holder of a uni- 1 versity or an educational bursary; provided that in any ease the arrangements made in respect of his board and lodging shall first ibe approved by the authorities of the school attended." Where the young person lives at home and is, in the opinion of the Director of Education, obliged to travel by means other than rail more than four miles daslv each way in order to prosecute his studies, he shall if lie regularly attends day classes as aforesaid be entitled to a refund of the amount actually and necessarily expended by him in such travelling up to £5 per annum, or up to £lO per annum if he regularly attends a secondary school, a district high school, or a technical high school, or is the holder of a university or an educational bursary. A bursary under these regulations shall not be tenable after the holder attains the age of twenty-three -years.
