OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The funeral of the late Mr. Jas. Aitken Lusk was largely attended on Sunday by settlers and residents from all parts of the district, testifying to the high esteem in which deeeased was held. The Rev. J, W. Russell officiated at the graveside. Deceased was a well-known settler, and for some years was proprietor of the Oaonui store. The churches on Sunday evening were forced to fall back on the kerosene lamps, the town lighting system having failed, owing to the shortage of carbide. The holidays were quiet here. Those able to close their premises for the Christmas aiul New Year holidays journeyed to tlie larger towns. The beach was well patronised by visitors, and continues to he visited by people from outside the district. On Friday evening a public farewell was given to Privates J. Dilkes, Rowlands, V. Hickey, A. Jensen, and L. Callaghan. Mr. Cornish wished the men God-speed and a safe return. Privates Dilkes and Jensen were presented with safety razors, and Hickey, Rowlands and Callaghan with wristlet watches. On behalf of the ladies' guild, each was presented with a "hussiv." Our two picture companies gave n liberal supply of programmes during the holidays, tor the two weeks eighi programmes were submitted, and drew goott. attendances. The coastal lands are appearing strawcolored, showing the need for rain. The Opunake Dairy Factory will commence tlie manufacture of casein at an early date. Bacon pigs arc scarcer this year, and the majority of those coming forward are taken by outside firms. The funeral of the late Mrs. G. Cor- ; kill was one of the longest seen in the district. The. coffin was covered with wreaths. The Rev. H. Walke read the burial service at the graveside. The local fishermen have kept up a fairly good supply of fresh fish to the local residents. Clegliorn, loqal manager of Mr. Gow's legal office, returned home on Friday, after Jiaviiig joined tlie benedicts, at Wellington, during his vacation..
